MEERUT: A UP police constable posted at Shamli police station , his son and five others were booked for dowry death for demanding dowry and harassing the 24-year-old daughter-in-law who committed suicide by hanging herself from the shower of the bathroom at their house in Ganga Nagar of Meerut, on Sunday.The complaint filed by Ram Bhajan Singh , father of the victim Sangeeta, read, “The family had demanded a Scorpio car in dowry at the time of wedding. However, we gave an Alto car along with Rs 20 lakh. But they continued to harass my daughter because their demands weren’t met. A few months ago, she was even given some poisonous substance in her tea by her husband and in-laws. However, we did not make a police complaint as they apologised and the matter was sorted.”On Sunday, Sangeeta’s family was called to her in-laws’ residence saying that she had fainted. However, on reaching the house, her parents were in for a shock when they saw her hanging from the shower of the bathroom - which was open from inside.A suicide note was also found at the spot in which she apologised to her parents and said that she was harassed so much that she had to take the grave step.Detailing, Rakesh Kumar, station house officer, Ganga Nagar police station , said, “An FIR has been filed under IPC section 498 a (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304 b (dowry death) and 3/4 Dowry Prohibition Act against her husband Gaurav, father-in-law Gajendra Singh (who is posted at Shamli police station and is currently on duty in Kumbh Mela), mother-in-law Kashmiri, two brothers-in-law Sanjeev and Anil, and two sisters-in-law Jyoti and Ruby.”The accused are at large and the body of the woman has been sent for postmortem to get a clearer picture of the case.
