Prenatal sex determination test racket busted in city house, 3 held

Meerut: Police on Tuesday unearthed a racket which was illegally conducting pre-natal sex determination tests after charging hefty amount. Three members of the gang, which was taking Rs 30,000 to reveal the gender of the unborn child, were arrested from a house in city’s Bhawanpur area. The accused met her at Tejgarhi and took her to a house in one Garhi village. Much before her test could be done, we reached the spot and the accused in question were arrested by the police.”All the accused are residents of Meerut. We sent a woman in disguise of a patient as our decoy.

Meerut: Police on Tuesday unearthed a racket which was illegally conducting pre-natal sex determination tests after charging hefty amount. Three members of the gang, which was taking Rs 30,000 to reveal the gender of the unborn child, were arrested from a house in city’s Bhawanpur area. The gang was busted with the help of a woman who acted as decoys to catch the accused.The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PC-PNDT) team also seized an ultrasound machine worth Rs 2.5 lakh and a computer tablet, on which the ultrasound was seen, along with Rs 42,000 cash.Bobby, Pratap and Ashok Kumar were arrested from the spot and a case under the PCPNDT Act has been filed against them.Dr Praveen Kumar Gautam, nodal officer of PC-PNDT team, Meerut, said: “I was getting inputs about some technician who was wandering in villages of Meerut with portable ultrasound machines to illegally detect sex of the foetus.“On Tuesday, we got a tip-off about him. We sent a woman in disguise of a patient as our decoy. The accused met her at Tejgarhi and took her to a house in one Garhi village. Much before her test could be done, we reached the spot and the accused in question were arrested by the police.”All the accused are residents of Meerut. While Ashok Kumar is the main accused and a technician, Pratap worked at a city’s diagnostic centre from where, Dr Gautam believes, the gang got patients easily.The residence at which the team found the accused conducting sex determination belonged to the brother-in-law and sister of the accused Bobby.“We have named eight persons in the FIR,” said Dr Gautam.
