Meerut civic body fudges data to declare city free from open defecation, exposed after probe

Meerut: Over three months after it declared the Meerut city free from open defecation, a probe launched by divisional commissioner has found that the Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) had fudged records on construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat mission to meet the target.The city’s municipal corporation had on October 2 last year declared the city open defecation free (ODF). A majority of the toilets could not be located during the inspection because the process of geo-tagging is also incomplete,” additional commissioner Rai said.Senior officials at the corporation were unavailable for their comment. It also sought ODF certification claiming that more than 90% of target of construction of toilets has been met.To cross-check the claim, divisional commissioner Anita Meshram had set up a four-member committee under additional commissioner Rajneesh Rai. The probe order, issued on November 15 last year, had mentioned the civic body’s claim of constructing 15,485 toilets against the target of 20,404 in city area.However, the panel was in for a surprise.In its report, the four-member committee has exposed the civic body’s claims. It stated that most of the toilets are yet to be completed and the mandatory geo-tagging has also not been done.“Most of the toilets which were randomly checked during inspection are still under construction.
