A total of 48 criminals were killed in the same time span though at least 70 criminals have been killed in encounters ever since the Yogi government took over in March 2017. They have not conducted an inquiry and based their report on roving media reports. Who are they to decide that extrajudicial killngs have happened. Meerut: Reacting to concerns raised by United Nations human rights experts over allegations of at least 59 alleged extrajudicial killings by police in UP since March 2017, ADG (law and order) Anand Kumar questioned the intervention of UN special rapporteurs."First thing first, none of them is Indian. They have not conducted an inquiry and based their report on roving media reports. Who are they to decide that extrajudicial killngs have happened. These guys will decide sitting in Geneva? Do you think India is a Banana republic that we are picking up criminals and killing," the ADG (LO) asked. In his strong rebuttal, ADG Kumar claimed that the report was published with a malicious intent and was aimed at showing the department in poor light."The malicious intent of this news release is apparent from so called experts having deliberately chosen only Muslim criminals as proof of the communal bias whereas the other 44 Hindu criminals also killed during police action has been perilously ignored," he said.According to a statement issued by the office of the High Commissioner for United Nations Human Rights (OHCHR), the four experts — Agnes Callamard, Michel Forst, Nils Melzer and Ahmed Shaheed — sent detailed information to the Indian Government on 15 of the cases, most concerning individuals from Muslim communities living in poverty."We are extremely concerned about the pattern of events: individuals allegedly being abducted or arrested before their killing, and their bodies bearing injuries indicative of torture," the UN experts had said.Rebutting the claims, Kumar said," It is indeed shocking that unverified, unsubstantiated and wild allegations with no basis in facts have been given credence to make sweeping comments and put forth a teleological analysis."According to the official figure, 3,19,000 odd criminals have been arrested between March 17-18. A total of 48 criminals were killed in the same time span though at least 70 criminals have been killed in encounters ever since the Yogi government took over in March 2017.
