Girl, 23, burnt to death for dowry; 2 days later distraught father breaks down, begs for the body

Bijnor: A 52-year-old man broke down and begged in front of Bijnor district magistrate (DM) office on Friday evening for the custody of his daughter’s body lying in mortuary for the last two days. But, the doctors claimed that police have not submitted required papers.Lal Singh’s 23-year-old daughter, Monica, was burnt to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws for not able to fulfil their dowry demand. According to officials, the girl’s body was not handed over to the family as police was waiting for the doctors to conduct post-mortem examination on it. When we rushed to the house, we found that she was burnt to death. But, later, I got a call from her in-laws that she was no more.

Since the death on Wednesday, Singh had been running from pillar to post to get the body of his daughter for the last rites.An FIR was registered, but no arrest has been made so far.Singh said: “I got married my daughter Monika to Arjun Singh of Jalalabad four years ago. After some time, her in-laws started asking for dowry in cash. When I showed my inability to fulfil their demand, they started torturing her. Apart from this, she had no child. So, they wanted to eliminate her.”Singh further said: “I spoke to my daughter on Wednesday morning. She was fine. But, later, I got a call from her in-laws that she was no more. When we rushed to the house, we found that she was burnt to death. We informed police and filed a case.”The case was registered against her husband Arjun Singh and four others, including the in-laws.Singh also alleged that police was “harboring the culprits and has not arrested them.”Already distraught with the daughter’s death, Singh didn’t know what was in the store for him next.“The body of my daughter was sent to district hospital on Wednesday night. But post-mortem was not conducted. Two days have passed but the officials are not listening to me. What should I do?” asked a visibly distraught Singh. He had folded his torn pant until knees in a futile attempt to conceal his condition.Not slept for two days, Singh was seen crying and begging for the body of his daughter in the DM office on Friday.When contacted, chief medical superintendent Sukhveer Singh said: “Police have not submitted proper documents, due to which the autopsy was delayed.” The charge was denied by police.Najibabad station house officer Sanjay Kumar Panchal said: “Police have submitted all the papers while sending the body to the district hospital.”Amid the blame game, Singh was still shuffling between the DM office and the hospital for her daughter's body.
