Spat over throwing of Holi colour turns violent

Meerut: Communal tension prevailed at Gangnauli village in Baghpat district after some youths attacked some members of the minority community on Holi day. Trouble started when a few local youths threw gulal (colour) on members of the minority community while they were returning from a mosque.This led to a heated argument between two groups and soon turned violent. The incident occurred on Thursday when a few drunk youths passing through a Muslim locality threw colour on members of the other community, which led to a ruckus. An FIR has been filed and a force deployed.According to one of the victims, Farhan, 18, “We were returning from mosque after offering namaz when a group of 20 men began throwing colour on us. Those injured were given immediate first aid and they have been discharged.”

An FIR has been filed and a force deployed.According to one of the victims, Farhan, 18, “We were returning from mosque after offering namaz when a group of 20 men began throwing colour on us. When we objected, they attacked us with lathis. Two women who tried to defend us were also beaten up.”Ajay Kumar Sharma, station house officer, Doghat police station, said, “We have filed an FIR against 15 named persons out of which six have been arrested and efforts are on to nab the rest. The incident occurred on Thursday when a few drunk youths passing through a Muslim locality threw colour on members of the other community, which led to a ruckus. As of now the situation is completely under control at the village. Those injured were given immediate first aid and they have been discharged.”
