Meerut: In a disturbing development, a man slit his wife’s throat in a busy market area on Wednesday morning sending shockwaves throughout the region. The woman died on the spot.The incident occurred near Maccharan under Sadar police station where clash between police and locals had led to gutting down of more than 200 dwellings during an anti-encroachment drive a few weeks ago.Police claimed that marital discord was the primary reason behind the ghastly step taken by 35-year-old Wasim Ahmad. The victim has been identified as Nahida Begum. She was 32 years old. The accused and the victim had been married for the more than a decade. It was a love marriageStation incharge of Sadar police station, Vijay Gupta, said “They were married for the last 11 years and as per the preliminary investigation, it has come to light that Wasim had started doubting the integrity of his wife which rose to such a level that he killed her in a fit of rage. Wasim has been arrested and he has confessed to his crime. We have also recovered the knife which was used for killing the victim. Nahida’s body has been sent for post mortem. Her family has also confirmed that the couple was having strained relationship for quite some time.”Akram Ahmad, an eye witness, said, “It happened in the spur of a moment when Wasim came from behind and stabbed his wife a couple of time before slitting her throat in full public view.” Police sources further claimed that Wasim was working as a labourer.
