Meerut: When Aarti Kumar had tied the knot, she knew for sure that her life was going to change. But, she had no inkling that it will turn upside down. Aarti had never visited a police station before and had seen the corridors of courts only in Hindi movies. Now, at the age of 27, she is a frequent visitor to both the places, where she is often accompanied by her two minor daughters. Her husband, Randhir Kumar, was murdered in 2013 allegedly by a neighbour and local strongman, Guddu (who goes by his first name).Since then, it has been a lonely battle for Aarti, who has no source of income. Aarti’s family of six survives on a mere Rs 4,000 per month earned by her mother-in-law.Soon after her husband’s death, Aarti started getting death threats from the accused, who soon got a bail and came out of jail. She claims that the accused wanted her to withdraw the case, which is now in court.“He has been constantly threatening to kill us if we don’t withdraw the case. He even barged into our house with a pistol, but thankfully did not shoot us,” said Aarti, as tears rolled down her eyes.Aarti claimed that when she approached police officers and told them about the threat to her life, they drove her away.“They (policemen) told me to go home and not take the threat seriously. They said that Guddu will not do anything,” she said. Guddu was booked under section 302 of IPC (murder). However, he got a bail in 2014.“He lives close to where we live. We are under constant threat. The police are not doing nothing,” she said.“My life revolves around courts and police stations now in the search of justice. I got no help from police or from administration. The killer is roaming around freely and threatening us with impunity and I am made to run from pillar to post. A couple of times, he even threatened to kill me inside the court premises and the police just stood and watched,” Aarti said. After losing hope, Aarti approached chief minister Yogi Adtiyanath at ‘Janta Durbaar’.“He heard my problems patiently and assured that action will be taken soon. We came back assured. But, I am still waiting,” she said. When contacted, police said that investigation into the case is at its last leg.“We are taking this matter seriously and it will be resolved soon. The wife of the deceased came to us and we treated her with care. We assured her of security and also provided them food as they are very poor,” said UN Mishra, circle officer (CO) of Ganga Nagar Police Station.
