Meerut: A local police station in Meerut had to bear the brunt of a mob attack over the release of a murder accused. The incident happened in Parikshitgarh, 20 km from here, soon after the Eid namaz was offered on Monday. A large crowd attacked the Parikshitgarh thana. As most policemen were deployed at mosques, only a handful of them were present to handle the mob. The violence and stone-pelting left several injured including policemen.According to sources, a man from the minority community was murdered two days ago after which three including a man from the majority community were picked up. However, he was let go on Sunday night, leading to considerable anger among the minority community, said sources. This led to the attack on the police station.According to sources, a local man named Amitabh Abbasi (35) was murdered two days ago, after which police picked up two brothers, Wasim Ahmad and Naeem. Later, during questioning, the two revealed three more names that included a man from the majority community named Nagesh Sharma, 55.However, said police officials, after investigations “established” that Wasim, 34, had murdered Abbasi by himself, the rest of the suspects including Sharma were released. But Wasim’s relatives blamed the police for being partial towards Sharma as he belonged to the majority community.Eventually, the anger spilled out against the local police station after the Eid namaz. Superintendent of police (rural) Rajesh Kumar said, “A big crowd gathered outside the thana raising slogans against the police. First women entered and damaged property and then the stone pelting began. Policemen had to run for cover.” Later, a force arrived with a contingent of PAC and personnel from other police stations and had to resort to firing in the air to disperse the crowd. When asked why Sharma was let off, Kumar said, “The murder was singlehandedly committed by Wasim, for personal reasons. On Saturday night, Wasim took Abbasi to a forest nearby and cut his throat. Wasim has confessed to the murder. So there was no point in detaining the others.”Meanwhile, police have booked 50 named and 200 unidentified people for the violence and have detained five persons so far.
