Bijnor: Over two months after the launch of the radio programme ‘Aao Angrezi Sikhen’ (let us learn English), the UP government in partnership with UNICEF will now test the students of upper primary schools to gauge the success of the unique initiative.So far, All India Radio’s Lucknow centre has telecast 28 episodes for the students of classes VI to VIII. The programme is being aired on alternate days -- Monday, Wednesday and Friday-- between 10:45am and 11am.The programme was launched on July 17 to teach English to students of government schools, who lag behind their peers studying in private schools.The state’s project director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has sent a letter to basic shiksha adhikaris (BSAs) of all districts, asking them to assess the impact of the programme through tests.“So far, 28 episodes have been broadcast. Now the state government wants to gauge the effectiveness of this programme. In Bijnor, eight schools have been selected by higher authorities. District-level teams will make assessments of these schools over several points. They will know how much English the students have learnt so far,” said Uma Pal, district coordinator and master trainer for the programme.“The teams will prepare a report by October 4 and it will be submitted to the higher authorities by October 5. This assessment will be made with the help of the UNICEF.”In Bijnor alone, there are a total of 2,556 government schools. Around five students from each class will be assessed and their reports will be compiled. Then, it will be sent to higher authorities for feedback.”
