Candidates send sweets to voters’ homes, feed them at polling booths on election day

Speaking to TOI, Shamli DM Indra Vikram Singh said, “Feeding one’s staff deputed at polling stations is not wrong, but you cannot seek votes on the polling day. On Saturday, police in Ganganagar area even seized two pushcarts on which around 100 packets of sweets were placed for distribution. From ladoos to breakfast, candidates in various districts went all out to woo voters on election, while police were busy ensuring trouble-free voting at the booths.In Meerut, voters witnessed delivery of packets of ladoos directly to homes, early in the morning. This was gross violation of model code of conduct and subsequently I ordered FIR against her.”During election time, contestants do everything in their power to attract voters.

Meerut: Anjana Bansal, an independent candidate for the post of Shamli municipality chairperson found a novel way of wooing her voters right outside the polling booth.Bansal served snacks and tea in specially arranged cups on which were printed her election symbol, ‘jeep’. After taking note of the development, the Shamli district magistrate (DM) ordered an FIR against her for violating the model code of conduct.On Wednesday, Shamli was one of the 24 districts of UP that went for civic polls. From ladoos to breakfast, candidates in various districts went all out to woo voters on election, while police were busy ensuring trouble-free voting at the booths.In Meerut, voters witnessed delivery of packets of ladoos directly to homes, early in the morning. Sarla Khanna, resident of ward no. 7 received a packet of four ladoos just before she was due to leave her home to cast vote with the family.Khanna told TOI, “All members of our colony got the packets from one of the candidates, whose name I will not reveal as it would compromise my position.”A sweet shop owner even confessed to manufacturing 6,000 packets of sweets in Pallavpuram area.
