BHOPAL: Bhopal is known, among other things, for its passion for motor sports, especially mud rally of jeeps. Every year either just before the monsoon sets in or after about a month of its end hoards of enthusiasts gather at one of the many lakes and dams for the thrill and fun filled mud challenge rally. While the rally is hugely popular among the people of the city, its preparation equally take fancy of the participants and spectators alike.

These practice sessions are held on Sundays, either at Kaliasot, Kolar or Kerwa dam. This year the practice began at Kerwa dam. Several enthusiasts gathered at the dam on Sunday in their jeeps and gypsys and tested their vehicles` ability to manoeuvre through mud and water logged channels of the dam`s receding water line.

Last year`s Mud Challenge champion, Shamim Khan, who had also come to have a spin in his Gypsy, said that this year the rally would be held after the monsoons, as the Ramzan would be beginning by the end of this month. Khan had won a `Thar` as the prize in last year`s rally. The best part of these practice sessions is the spirit of camaraderie among the participants and onlookers alike.

While the participants try and out-do one another in the runs through the mud and water logged channels, almost every one is instantly ready to help in case a vehicles gets stuck anywhere. These sessions and the rallies themselves are also make totally strangers good friends more often than not. Accidents too, are a part of these practice sessions and the rally.

Last Sunday two Gypsies turned turtle during the practice and a youth suffered a broken wrist. While briken bones and bruises have been common, fortunately there has not been any casualty. Practice for the rally ended on Sunday, as Ramzan begins from Monday.

Now the participants and spectators, both, are already waiting for the rally, which would be held soon after the Eid festival, about a month from now..
