INDORE: A murder accused was shot dead at point-blank range in government-run MY hospital by a hooded assailant early Monday morning, sending shock waves in the area. In a scene straight from Bollywood flick, stockily built killer entered the hospital in doctor`s apron and a surgical mask, climbed stairs, and headed straight for bed number 17 on the third floor of 50-year-old hospital. Once there, the killer, whose identity is still not known, whipped out a pistol from apron and pulled the trigger on the under-trial, Ram Dayal, 25, around 4.

30am. The under-trial, who was being treated for brain tumor, could not move from the bed and took the bullet behind right ear lobe. Doctors rushed Dayal to the ICU, but couldn`t be saved despite sustained efforts.

Guard Yeshwant, who had brought the accused to hospital from Indore central jail in June, was reportedly sitting outside the ward at the time of chilling incident, exposing security in major hospital of the state. The sound of gunshot boomed across the ward, but before jail guards or other patients and attendants could realize what had happened, alleged killer coolly walked out of the ward and, the hospital building. "Hospital authorities informed the police, two hours after the incident," deputy inspector general (DIG Indore range) Rakesh Gupta said.

The police have an outpost on hospital premises. "Guard Yeshwant has been suspended with immediate effect," central jail superintendent Gopal Tamrkar said. The deceased, who was the resident of Handia in Harda district, was accused of killing his brother-in-law in Kantaphod area of Dewas district in 2012.

Before shifting to Indore central jail last month, he was lodged in Kannod jail in Dewas district. He was admitted to the MY Hospital along with another murder accused and jail inmate Jitendra alias JD, 30. While Ram Dayal was on bed number 18, JD, prime accused in history sheeter Jitu Thakur`s killing in Banganga area of Indore in 2013, JD was treated on bed number 17 for treatment of excessively developed breasts.

However, 10 hours before the killing, JD was shifted from bed number 17 to 12 as he complained of intolerable stench from a gangrene patient, while Ram Dayal was shifted to the bed number 17 that turned out to be his death bed. JD alleged that the killer had come to eliminate him and not Ram Dayal. He claimed that the could have been either Hemu Thakur, brother of Jitu Thakur allegedly killed by JD in November 2013, or any of his aide, who wanted to finish him off.

The DIG, however, said nothing can be ruled out right now, but it would be too premature to comment on it without detailed investigations. "A murder case has been lodged at Sanyogitaganj police station against unidentified man. Those who may have enmity with JD are being screened to ascertain whether JD was real target of murderer," superintendent of police (SP East) OP Tripathi said.

Tamrakar said after the incident JD requested that he didn`t want to stay in hospital, after which he was discharged and shifted to the jail..
