SHIRDI: Devotees of Saibaba kept filling the `hundis` or donation boxes of the Saibaba at Shirdi temple, even in the first 50 days of cash crunch The temple trust`s official figures show that the temple received Rs 35 crore as donation, apart from 2.9kg gold and 56kg silver from devotees between November 8 and December 30. In the 21-day period from December 10 to 30, the donation figures surged from Rs 17.43 crore to 35 crore.Trustee Sachin Tambe , said, "Friday was the last day for the temple trusts across the state to deposit old currency notes received during the demonetisation period to their respective bank accounts. It has been a busy day for the temple`s accounts department as well."Tambe said that the total collection figure from November 8 to December 8 was comparatively less than the temple`s average monthly collection figure of Rs 19.5 crore. But, between December 10 and 30, the temple received around Rs 17.5 crore."Year-end is the time when devotees visit Shirdi in large numbers. As the number of visitors rises, donations also go up in December. I think, the surge over the last 20 days is normal and it should not be considered an effect of demonetisation," Tambe said.The trustee added that the temple received scrapped Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes worth Rs 4.53 crore and new notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 denominations worth Rs 3.8 crore in the 50-day period. The paid darshan or VIP pass facility which started this month has been made open for all and has earned over Rs 3.18crore for the temple."Looking at the rising number of visitors during the New Year weekend, we have organized a two-day Shirdi Mahotsav cultural festival in the temple premises," Tambe said.Prominent Bhajan singers from Delhi, Lucknow, and Bangalore will hold their concerts at Shirdi on December 31 and January 1. As the temple will remain open for 24 hours, it may bring more donations for temple.
