more-in Traders in Puducherry have proposed to go ahead with their call for a token stir on Tuesday in the Union Territory to protest against the “exorbitant taxes” levied by the municipalities and commune panchayats in Puducherry. S. Balou, secretary of the Puducherry Traders Federation, told presspersons here on Monday that the decision to increase taxes under various heads had not been placed in the Legislative Assembly. Goods and Services Tax (GST) had affected small businesses in Puducherry. But now the municipalities and commune panchayats were levying taxes under various heads, including property tax, commercial establishments and other taxes. Committee sought The federation had submitted a representation to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy to constitute a committee comprising elected representatives, traders, and government officials to review the taxes. The government had invited a few people for talks, but did not call Puducherry Traders’ Federation. Traders in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam have decided to go ahead with the stir till the government rolled back the increase in taxes. Cinema owners have extended r support to the stir and will shut down on Tuesday.
