12-hour bandh call gets mixed response

Several political parties, including the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee, had extended support to the bandh.

Most shops and business establishments remained shut on Jawaharlal Nehru Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Anna Salai, near Bus Stand and Mission Street. Shops remained open in suburban areas. Road blocked While private buses kept off the road, government buses, autorickshaws, share autos and private vehicles plied without any hindrance. A good number of private schools and higher educational institutions functioned as usual. PMK workers blocked the road at Villianur by burning a tree. The police intervened and restored traffic. Party cadre held a protest at the Power Grid Corporation of India office at Villianur and forced the management of a factory to close for the day. Rally taken out Convenor of Puducherry unit of the party K. Dhanraj led a rally from the new bus stand and, after passing through several parts of the city, staged a rail roko. As many as 210 workers courted arrest while staging the rail roko. Mr. Dhanraj, in his address, blamed the Union Government for present situation. He said the Centre was discriminating against the farmers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The party would continue with the agitation till the Cauvery Management Board was constituted, he said. Several political parties, including the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee, had extended support to the bandh.
