Jipmer to treat wounds with marine resource

Doctors at JIPMER have begun using a marine resource sourced from shrimps for wound management. from Chennai were guest speakers at the programme, which also featured a panel discussion on the practical aspects of use of this marine resource in the management of chronic wounds. Jipmer Director, Dr. S Vivekanandam, said the protocol was initiated by the Department of Plastic Surgery. Marine resources are used to help patients with chronic wounds such as burns, diabetic foot ulcers, bed sores, infections, trauma and even surgery-related injury. Jipmer, as a Regional Resource Centre (RRC) for telemedicine, telecasted the CME proceedings on a real-time basis to more than 160 medical colleges of South India.

As a forerunner, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) was recently organised on ‘Wound Update-2018’ by the Department of Plastic Surgery to sensitise and to make aware of this technology in wound management. According to the Director, the patented technology for the novel treatment already exists in US and other countries but the protocol has just recently begun entering the clinical settings across India. Jipmer, as a Regional Resource Centre (RRC) for telemedicine, telecasted the CME proceedings on a real-time basis to more than 160 medical colleges of South India. Dr. Ravi Kumar Chittoria and Dr. Dinesh Kumar S. from the Plastic Surgery unit at Jipmer who led the discussions said the sessions were attended by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, general surgeons, orthopedicians, dental surgeons and nurses. Dr. G. Manokaran and Dr. Rajmohan V.M. from Chennai were guest speakers at the programme, which also featured a panel discussion on the practical aspects of use of this marine resource in the management of chronic wounds. Jipmer has started using on patients of wounds of different etiologies. The JIPMER Director said this treatment is provided free of cost to the patients. The subsequent plan is to publish the results in an indexed journal for raising awareness among the medical fraternity.
