PUNE: After finding that 78 colleges did not fill the internal, project and laboratory marks of their students or submitted erroneous marks in the semester examinations of April and May 2023 leading to a delay in results of those students, a committee formed by Savitribai Phule Pune University has imposed fines of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 on them. The university also warned them of strict action if they repeat the mistake. Action as per section 48 (5) (c) of the Maharashtra Public University Act 2016 has been recommended by the committee against the teachers whose carelessness resulted in the mistakes. A senior official from the university said they first declare all the results online. It is when students come to know that they have not been marked correctly or declared absent for internal, project, extra credits and other subjects, which are evaluated at the college level. The college then appeals to the university to change the content of the marks. It is a sensitive topic and needs intense scrutiny to avoid any malpractices. We have a Lapses Committee that looks into the paper work to verify the claims made by the college. However, it also shows carelessness among teachers. The university has also introduced fines for officials, evaluators, and college principals involved in malpractice. The new ordinance also addresses the use of electronic gadgets during exams, including smart watches. The changes are expected to be effective from the next academic year, pending final approval from the state government.Aided college teachers warn of stir over pay parityThe Chandigarh Aided College Teachers Association has warned Panjab University that they will launch an agitation over the denial of UGC 7th Pay Commission to unaided teachers and the failure to revise salaries of ad hoc/guest faculty in city colleges. They strongly condemned the universitys attitude towards teachers and urged them to intervene and direct private managements to comply with the rules. If their demands are not met, they will launch an indefinite agitation in front of the VC office.
