PUNE: A preterm baby girl born at 26 weeks with multiple birth defects and weighing just 800g could have met the same fate as her twin, who passed away barely four days after birth.But being a fighter, as the father call her, she survived an arduous five-hour journey from Solapur to Pune and also overcome all the medical conditions to return home after complete recoveryon October 27.This is a rare event since most preterm babies with such complications seldom survive such long journeys, a health expert said.The baby girl, born on August 1, was brought to Punes Sahyadri Hospital on August 23. She was the only hope for the parents, who lost her twin to complications barely four days after their birth. The twins were born through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The girl was suffering from severe respiratory distress syndrome, fulminant sepsis and large Patent Ductus Arteriosus [a heart defect], Dr Pradeep Suryawanshi, director, department of paediatrics and neonatology at Sahyadri Hospital said.He said the baby was kept in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for more than 64 days. It was only after she recovered completely that she was discharged on October 27, Dr Suryawanshi said.Her father told TOI, She is a fighter. She was initially undergoing treatment at a hospital in Solapur, which referred her to Pune as they did not have the advanced treatment facilities. She survived the five-hour journey and also overcome all the medical conditions to survive and recover completely She is our only hope as her twin passed away due to complications four days after birth.Dr Preeti Lad, another paediatrician from the team, said, The baby girl now weighs 1.9kg and has also achieved complete neurodevelopmental outcome.
