The "eyes" and "nose" are cinder cones, while the whitish area around the "mouth" is a mineral crust made of natron. The regions geological history has been studied through satellite observations, and the formation of Trou au Natron is considered a recent significant event. Accessing the area is challenging, but rock and fossil samples suggest a glacial lake existed there about 14,000 years ago.
