Punawale waste mgmt plant protest picks up

Pune: Dressed in black, many residents of Punawale, Marunji, Hinjewadi and nearby areas rode their two-wheelers in a rally on Sunday morning.They were protesting against the civic administrations plan to construct a solid waste management plant near Kate Vasti area in Punawale, demanding it be scrapped. Rohan Chodankar, a resident, said, Felling trees in Punawale forest area may lead to ecological imbalance as they are the lungs for Jambhe, Marunji, Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad and Hinjewadi areas.We demand it be cancelled.The plant proposed on 22 hectares of forest land by the civic body in 2008 was delayed. PCMC plans to complete the land acquisition process by this December. According to some findings, garbage stink carries over a 5km radius and many more areas such as Wakad and Hinjewadi will also be affected, Sagar Lendwe, another resident, said.Citizens groups said they will approach the court. We held a meeting with lawyers and decide in the next two weeks to file a PIL. PCMC is violating several norms for this plant, Sachin Londhe, vice-president of Pimpri Chinchwad Co-operative Housing Society Federation, said.
