27L poll roll entries with same photographs in Maha

Pune: Over 27 lakh entries in the Maharashtra poll roll with similar photographs would have to be checked and deleted before January 5 next year, a senior state election official said on Monday.The Election Commission of India (ECI) had on November 11 directed states to weed out multiple Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) with photographs of the same person in the electoral roll ahead of next years Lok Sabha elections.State election officials and booth level officers (BLO) have been directed to check the district wise data ahead of the publication of the final roll publication on January 5, 2023, state chief electoral officer Shrikant Deshpande told TOI. Maharashtra has 9.08 crore voters, according to the draft roll published on October 27.The BLOs have to verify the duplicate entries. If a persons photograph reflects in two constituencies in two districts, the BLO has to check and confirm with that individual before deleting the names. The ECI had earlier initiated the activity early in the year, but subsequently discontinued it. The emphasis is on an error-free voters roll, Deshpande said.Five states, including Maharashtra, have registered maximum photo-similar entries, stated a recent Election ECI report. Overall, the country registered 2.78 crore such entries, it stated.Uttar Pradesh leads the tally with 48.67 lakh photo-similar entries, followed by Bihar (32.48 lakh), Tamil Nadu (30.66 lakh), Maharashtra (27.44 lakh) and Karnataka (25.25 lakh), stated a recent report.A citizen said he was unable to find his photograph on the electoral roll in spite of it being there earlier. I just hope that it has not been randomly deleted, he told TOI.Demographic similar entriesa concernOver 31 lakh demographic similar entries (DSE) entries, which were found similar in terms of name, age, gender, relation type and relation name, are reflected on the Maharashtra electoral roll. We hope to carry out the due checks for such names and ensure that the final voter roll is free of such entries, state chief electoral officer Shrikant Deshpande said.
