Pune: Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar has directed officials to prepare a proposal to expand the limits of the Chakan Municipal Council. The deputy CM on Tuesday chaired a meeting at Mantralaya in Mumbai on development issues related to the Chakan and Alandi municipal councils. The population in the municipal councils around Pune city is fast increasing. However, the capacity of these local bodies to provide services to citizens is limited. MLA Dilip Mohite has sought expansion of the boundary limits of the Chakan Municipal Council, as the population of the city and its surrounding areas has also increased, a statement issued by Ajit Pawars office after the meeting stated. Several local politicians claimed that migrant workers employed with various companies in the MIDC areas had settled in a large number in Chakan and its surrounding areas. Many of them have also acquired Aadhar cards of their new address from villages around Chakan. When had I first contested election in 2004, there were only 22,000 voters in my constituency. However, the population of every village around Chakan has now crossed above one lakh. Many workers from different states have settled in the city over the years. The increased population has added an additional burden on the municipal council, said MLA Dilip Mohite Patil, who represents Khed-Alandi in the assembly.Around 20 to 22 gram panchayats with a population of around 5 to 6 lakh come under the jurisdictions of the Chakan and Alandi municipal councils. The local politicians are also in favour of a merger of the two municipal councils to form a separate municipal corporation for the areas development, he said. The proposal to merge the two municipal councils was moved during the MVA government as well. I have again raised the demand for the merger at the meeting with the deputy chief minister. He has directed the officials to check the feasibility for the demand, Mohite said.We also published the following articles recentlyLucky escape for 36 passengers as MSRTC bus catches fire on Talegaon-Chakan roadA bus caught fire on the Talegaon-Chakan road, but all passengers had a lucky escape.
