Pune: The civic administration will take a decision to either build a grade separator or a flyover to manage traffic snarls at the busy Ambedkar chowk in Yerawada and connecting to the Airport Road based on an ongoing studys report to be submitted next month.The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will decide as per the recommendations.Regular commuters and nearby residents have been demanding that the authorities provide solutions to increasing traffic congestion witnessed at the junction.Former corporators from the area have joined in and said that Ambedkar and Sangamwadi chowks are two key junctions which require relief from traffic jams at the earliest.It may be noted that the PMC had recently appointed a consulting agency to study various options which would help reduce traffic snarls following persistent demands from citizens.The junction caters to the traffic coming from Sangamwadi chowk, Vishrantwadi and from Airport Road. Reportedly, the junction sees insurmountable snarls during rush hours.A PMC official said, The study is expected to be over by next month. The agency has also studied the topography to check feasibility of a grade separator. The alignment of a flyover or grade separator as well as other technical details will be decided based on the outcome of the study.Ramesh Pille, a local resident, said that last year, the PMC constructed a flyover at the Golf Course chowk (located a few metres ahead of the Ambedkar chowk) and it has helped reduce traffic congestion to a great extent. We want a similar facility at the Ambedkar chowk. Our demand is justified as the junction witnesses a rush of every size of vehicles through the day, he added.Tejas Shirke, a regular commuter to the Airport Road, said the civic administration should develop all stretches connecting to the airport. Citizens remain stuck at the Ambedkar and Sangamwadi chowks due to the rush. It is a key road that comes from the airport and goes towards Ambedkar chowk and onwards to Vishrantwadi. It should be developed as a priority road with a focus on reducing travel time, he added.Former corporator Sanjay Bhosale said the entire area — from Sangamwadi chowk to Airport Road — requires a detailed traffic management plan. All the chowks in the area require additional facilities, like flyovers or underpasses. This is mainly because the roads are directly connected to the airport.The administration is working on a similar proposal for a flyover or underpass at the Sangamwadi chowk.
