Senior citizens & kids are among easy targets

Pune: Kidnapping and abduction take a 45.6% share of the overall crimes against children in India while sexual offences account for 40% of crimes, data from NCRBs latest report shows.Children welfare boards and commissions in Maharashtra received 1,748 number of complaints and have registered 515 FIRs in 2022.The report reveals that 99.7% perpetrators in such crimes against children are people that the child knows and trusts.In the state, 91 minor girls have been kidnapped to be compelled for marriage. On a micro level, 670 children, mostly girls, have gone missing and assumed to be kidnapped or abducted.Anuradha Sahasrabudhe, director of Dnyana Devi, that works for childrens welfare, said many young girls are lured with false promises and they run away from home to be with online friends they have never met in person.They end up lost or worse with fake references, addresses and so on. This happens across the spectrum, from low income to well to do households , she added. Crimes against senior citizens witnessed a 9.3% increase with most cases related to theft, forgery, cheating and fraud. Many fall for scams, click baits and hacking when they use the internet to connect with friends and family or make payments. Anjali Raje, executive director of International Longevity Centre-India Chapter, said the elderly are vulnerable to being scammed when someone is sweet-talking them. Many dont realise that they are being taken advantage of nor do they have the enough cellphone literacy, she added. A total of 7,899 cases involving crime against children were reported last year, a rise of 4.3% from the previous year. Offences against elderly people also saw a significant increase, with 551 cases reported in 2022 compared to 210 cases in 2021. The crimes against senior citizens mostly involved verbal abuse and criminal intimidation over property disputes. Despite arrests being made, no convictions were recorded for crimes against senior citizens in 2022.Nearly 9% rise in crime against children in 2022 as compared to 2021Over 1.62 lakh cases of crime against children were registered in 2022, an 8.7% increase from 2021. Kidnapping and abduction accounted for 46% of the crimes, while sexual offences accounted for 40%. The crime rate per lakh children slightly increased from 33.6 in 2021 to 36.6 in 2022. The majority of sexual offences were perpetrated by individuals known to the victims, with family members being the accused in 3276 cases. Additionally, there was a 7.5% increase in the number of missing children reported in 2022 compared to 2021.Crimes against women & kids, murders up in Delhi: NCRB dataCybercrime in Delhi increased in 2022, with a total of 685 cases registered. Most cases involved obscene acts and sexual exploitation. Crimes against foreigners also rose by 48%, reaching 40 cases. Additionally, 11,880 children went missing, but 5,840 of them were traced. The prison system in Delhi faced an alarming occupancy rate of 184.5%, surpassing Union territories. Tihar prison housed 18,900 convicted and under-trial prisoners. The budget for Delhis prisons increased by 24.9% to Rs. 529.6 crore.
