Civic body seizes over 1,000 LPG cylinders from roadside vendors

Pune: The civic administration has in the past three months confiscated over 1,021 LPG cylinders from roadside vendors for illegally cooking food beside streets across the city.A Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) official said the civic body filed an offence last week against a Nagar Road-based distributor providing the vendors with cylinders. The action was taken after the registration numbers of the cylinders were tracked and linked to the distributor, a senior PMC official said.Law does not allow use of cylinders on the street for safety reasons.The administration has issued public notices in this regard. However, many vendors flout the norms, Madhav Jagtap, head of the PMCs anti-encroachment department, said on Monday.Representatives of the hawkers unions, however, said the action was not justified. They were of the view that the use of LPG cylinders is essential and authorities should allow that with mandatory safety guidelines.Another PMC official said the body was taking action against errant vendors based on the provisions of Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 201. The official said the roadside vendors often flouted the norms and used flammable elements such as gas or kerosene.Many vendors also use domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes. Contractors have begun sliding the inflatable bags under the plane to float it towards the runway, with the expectation that there will be minimal impact on the coral reef. Hawaii state officials will examine the reef for damage once the plane is removed.
