Pune: Top seed Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi overcame Aishi Bisht 7-5, 6-4 in a battle of 14-year-olds to move into the girls quarterfinals in the Gadre Marine ITF Juniors (Under-18) tennis championships at Deccan Gymkhana here on Wednesday.Maaya, a home grown talent from Coimbatore, is marginally senior to Aishi, whose parents migrated from New Delhi to the US when she was around five years old. While Maaya, a bundle of energy, had won four titles on the trot this year, Aishi clinched her first title in New Delhi last week. The California-based teen took the lead in both the sets, 3-1 in the first and 3-0 in the second, only for her rival to pull back and assert her authority.I had a bit of preparation, I was mentally prepared. So I just went out and played myself, Maaya said. After the first set, I lost a bit of focus. She had nothing to lose, so I had to put her under pressure, make her earn points. I just worked out my way. I like to play aggressive players, those who are hard. She was a little slow, so I didnt have the momentum to hit the shots. And I was lucky to pull it off in the second set, I played her a little tricky, and I was happy with myself about that.It turned out to be a day of epic three-setters in the mens draw. Frances Moise Kouame had won the doubles titles in Guwahati and New Delhi in the company of Rethin Pranav, the Indian third seed, who also clinched the singles titles over the two weeks.Kouame turned out to be a trojan horse of sorts as he outlasted his Indian rival and partner 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in three hours and five minutes.Pranav must feel gutted as he squandered a 4-1 lead in the decider while the Frenchman saved further two break points in the seventh game to avoid going down 2-5.Japans Hiromasa Koyama, finalist in Delhi, knocked out top seed Ivan Iutkin 6-4, 1-6, 6-1; Kandhavel Mahalingam Akhilandeswari got the better of sixth seed Hitesh Chauhan 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and Bushan Haobam overcame Indonesias Jaden Dwandaka Tan 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Second seed Kriish Tyagi sailed past Daniil Stepanov of Russia 6-3, 6-4, as did womens second Mandegar Farzami of Iran, beating Jannat Chiripal 6-3, 6-0.We also published the following articles recentlyFarmers seek relief for supplying poor quality paddy seedFarmers in Trichy demand compensation for their loss due to inferior quality samba paddy seeds.
