Hit-&-run on highway kills farmer siblings

Pune: Two brothers, both farmers, were killed after being hit by a four-wheeler when they were crossing the Pune-Solapur highway at Kedgaon village, about 65km from the city, around 6.30pm on Sunday.The accident occurred when Kailas Shelke (58) and his younger brother, Pandurang (56), were returning from their farm. Assistant inspector Sandesh Bawkar of the Yavat police said the Shelke brothers house is located on one side of the highway at Kedgaon, while their farm is located on the other.Everyday, the duo would cross the highway to reach their farm and return home. On Sunday, Kailas and Pandurang worked in the farm till late evening. Around 6.30pm, when they were crossing the highway to go home, a car hit them, Bawkar said.The duo suffered severe injuries. Residents of the area took them to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead by doctors, the officer said.Bawkar said the residents told the police that a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) knocked the Shelke brothers. There was no CCTV camera at the spot.
