RAIPUR: After ambushing security personnel and killing 22 of them, Maoists claim to have abducted a CoBRA commando, who is listed as missing since the encounter. “CoBRA constable Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, hailing from Jammu, is alive and safe. He is in our captivity. He will not be harmed. Will give further information in next call,” a man with a heavy voice, claiming to be a Maoist from ‘south sub-zonal bureau’, told a Sukma journalist over mobile phone at 11.26am on Monday.

Manhas’ wife Meenu has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah to get her soldier husband back. “I appeal to Modiji to rescue my husband safely, just the way Abhinandan was brought back from Pakistan. I last spoke to him on Friday. He told me he was going on an operation and would speak to me later,” she said.

Meenu said that the family hasn’t got any update or information in the past two days. “Whatever we know is from news media. We have been trying to call officials and the control room, but we are told that they will update us once information comes,” Meenu said.  A video of the jawan`s daughter was also released, where she says: “Papa come as soon as possible.”  Police have had no contact with Manhas in the last 48 hours. In the chaos of the ambush, security forces had scattered all over the forest, fighting running gunbattles with Maoists. Some made it to camps on their own, reinforcements rescued the rest, but Manhas is still missing.

DIG anti-Naxal operations O P Pal told TOI, “I can`t comment on the authenticity of the call, or if it was really a Maoist or the jawan has been abducted and is held hostage. There could be several possibilities for the jawan going missing. He may be alive, wounded, may reach a camp on his own or has been caught by Maoists. On Sunday, our jawans were looking for but he wasn’t found. Now, we will have to explore further on the information that he may have been kidnapped by Maoists.”  Maoists have often used hostages for PR, said official.
