Perfectly fine man spends a year in Visakhapatnam mental hospital

VISAKHAPATNAM: An Assamese man, who was robbed and lost at Ongole station and mistakenly brought to the Government Hospital for Mental Care (GHMC) in Visakhapatnam, was sent back to his family at Kokrajhad after a year.In June 2016, Ukila Kisku (35), hailing from a remote tribal village in Assam, was travelling in the general compartment of a Guwahati-Bengaluru train for a job in a hotel in Bengaluru. His luggage with money and ID cards were stolen in the train and as he tried to chase the thieves at Ongole station, he missed the train too.Bewildered, confused and penniless, the tribal man could not explain his plight to anyone due to language problem. Spending three days without food and shelter, Kisku pelted stones out of frustration on the streets of Ongole and broke a car window glass.The public beat him up and handed him over to the police. Assuming Kisku to be mentally disbalanced, the police brought him to GHMC.Dr K Sarda , assistant professor of psychiatry at GHMC, said, "We soon realised that Kisku did not have any problems but was actually confused, scared having lost his luggage and unable to communicate. We administered some antibiotics as he got injuries due to public beating. Thereafter, he stayed at our hospital as he was unable to tell us his address anything beyond Kokrajhad."To track his home address, the doctors contacted the Tejpur Government Mental Hospital, NGOs based in Kokrajhad, Guwahati police, besides networking through social media.Ultimately, Dr Sarda's friend's son-in-law K Thabasheelan, who is an IAS officer in Nagaland, helped them contact the SP of Kokrajhad T Sreejit, who successfully traced the family of Ukila to Tipkai village, Mangalajhoda in Kokrajhad."Finally, Kisku's cousin and the brother-in-law came with ID proof to take him back. "We didn't know where to search for him. But we are happy to see him again," said Dhena Kisku, Ukila's cousin.The doctors of GHMC and NGO Satya Sai Seva Trust sent off Ukila with Rs 10,500, clothes and food for him and his family on June 16. I am happy to go back to my village and will find some work there," said Ukila.Doctors of GHMC and NGO Satya Sai Seva Trust sent off Ukila with Rs 10,500, clothes and food for him and his family on June 16.
