Fulfil promise to provide eggs in midday meals: Activists to govt

Ranchi: The state chapter of the Right to Food Campaign on Thursday launched an anda-abhiyaan (egg campaign) across Jharkhand to press the government to give eggs daily to anganwadi centres and include it in midday meals. Food activists said that the state government has announced several times in the last three years that it would provide eggs to children in anganwadi six days a week. Apart from this, the announcement of five days of eggs in the midday meal in schools has also been made several times. But till date this announcement has not materialised. To remind the government of its promise, today an egg campaign was conducted in anganwadis by various organisations across the state on the call of Right to Food Campaign, Jharkhand, said Ashrafi Nand Prasad, state coordinator of the Right to Food Campaign.The eggs that were fed to the children were donated by the representatives of various rural and local organisations. Activists said that the campaign was run in about 75 anganwadi centres in 15 districts and 2,000 children were given eggs.Traditional village heads, public representatives, anganwadi workers, parents of children and social workers participated in the local programme where malnutrition and the need for eggs at the local level and in the entire state was discussed, he said. According to the government data (NFHS-5) for 2019-21, 40% of children under five years of age in the state are underweight. One-fourth of the adult women in the state have below normal BMI. It is also repeatedly found in various government surveys that tribal-dalit children of the state are more malnourished than other communities.Eggs are excellent source of nutrition which helps in physical and mental development of children. They are also economical.
