Mankis, Mundas march for four days seeking powers for village heads

Jamshedpur: The Mankis and Mundas, the traditional village heads of the tribal communities, have embarked on a four-day padyatra (march) to propel the state government to consider their seven separate demands.The 100-km Manki Munda Adhikar Padyatra, which started from Binapani High School ground in Baharagora on Sunday, will conclude at the DC office on October 18. The main demands include giving official recognition and authorisation to the traditional village heads in the East Singhbhum district like in West Singhbhum.Besides, they are demanding honourary pay for the village heads. Under the self-rule system, manki, munda, sardar, nayak, ghatwal, diuri, dakua, pahan, enjoy certain powers, which is delegated to them by the government.
