Santhals stir against planned Lugu power plant

Ramgarh: The outfit representing the Santhal tribal community members — the Santhal Samaj Dishom Manjhi Pargana — on Monday said it would launch a state-wide protest against the Damodar Valley Corporations (DVC)proposed hydel power plant at Lugu hill on the outskirts of Lalpania village in Bokaro district on November 5. Urging the DVC to withdraw the proposal, central committee president of the Santhals top body Fagu Besra said the proposed plant at the Lugu Buru Ghanta Bari located atop the Lugu hill, which is a place of worship for the Santhal community members, is an attack on their religious sentiments.We will not accept any attempt to encroach upon our holy hill and destroy our place of worship, he asserted.An official of the DVC said the proposed plant is a sanctioned project.Meanwhile, the members would also demonstrate near Parasnath hill in Giridih on November 12 to protest against the alleged encroachment of the hill by a religious community. The Santhals have been worshipping Marang Buru in the area from time immemorial. The British India government had given three decimals of land to the Jain community, which is mentioned in the British India government gezzete.
