Santhals from 3 states to intensify stir against proposed power plant

Ramgarh: Santhal tribes from three states, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, on Sunday raised demand for withdrawal of the proposed hydel power plant by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) claiming that it would affect their holy place of worship named Luguburu located atop Lugu hills under Gomia block in Bokaro district. They have demanded immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the power project threatening to launch a stir soon if their demand remains unfulfilled. Thousands of Santhal tribes on Sunday organized Akrosh rally in Lalpania and held a public meeting in this regard.Durga Charan Murmu, spokesperson of Adivasi Swashasan Vyavstha from Jamshedpur, said, Santhals have the right to worship. We will intensify our stir unless the proposal is not withdrawn. Santhals are already facing displacement due to rapid industrialisation and now our place of worship is under threat.Santhal Samaj Dishom Manjhi Pargana, a top Santhal tribe outfit, had earlier announced to hold a mega protest rally on November 5. Motorists in the Nilgiris faced difficulties navigating on ghat roads due to heavy rain and mist.
