Make it an animal-friendly Diwali, urge pet lovers

Jamshedpur: With Diwali round the corner, pet parents and animal lovers are worried about the sound trauma their furry friends will have to face as people will be busy bursting loud and even banned firecrackers throughout the night and many during daytime too.Expressing concern over such torture animals have to undergo both inside the house and out on the roads, veterinary doctor V K Singh told TOI on Wednesday, Some people are so cruel that they target street dogs with rockets and love seeing them run here and there for shelter.Many a times firecrackers are tied to the tail of the stray dogs on the roads of Jamshedpur. Such people need to be identified and punished.Dr Singh said, During Diwali, several pet owners from the city visit my chamber or call me up in the middle of the night to seek help as their animals start behaving abnormally after being exposed to loud sounds of firecrackers for hours.He said, Most of the animals try to take refuge under beds or places at home where they feel secured. Animals have to bear with sound pollution more than humans as studies have revealed that they hear any sound 20 times amplified than us.He advised pet parents, animal lovers and activists to put cotton plugs in the ears of their dogs and other animals during the Diwali week and till Chhath Puja to protect them from the sound of loud firecrackers.Dog lover Rimpa Singh, who hails from Sonari area of the Steel City, said, I am making arrangements to accommodate over 10 stray dogs from the nearby area in my house in the coming fortnight. If all goes well, she plans to extend this initiative during the winter months. Pet parent from Kadma, Rohit Adhikary said that during Diwali, he is worried for his dog and his grandmother, who is a heart patient. The administration should take a tough stand and ensure that law is not broken by revellers while bursting crackers. Schools must play an active role in creating awareness among students, who are possible users of loud crackers, he said.Veterinary doctor Dipak Mahato said there are a few medicines available in the market which, if given to animals, can reduce anxiety to some level.
