SAIL-BSL partners with RCPL to revolutionize Waste Management

  • | Friday | 29th March, 2024

SAILs Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration with Ram Charan Company Private Limited (RCPL) to tackle industrial waste while unlocking hidden value. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks the onset of a transformative journey towards converting slag, a significant by-product of steel production, into high-value products.   The MoU, inked by MD of RCPL, Kaushik Palicha, and CGM (Maintenance) of BSL, P.K.Baisakhiya, witnessed the convergence of industry leaders at BSL, including Executive Director (Works),  B.K.Tiwari. The strategic alliance aims to address the challenge of solid waste disposal by harnessing the untapped potential of steel slag.   Steel slag, often viewed as a waste, harbors valuable elements like Titanium, Nickel, Zinc, Iron, Aluminum, and Silica. Leveraging RCPLs innovative technology, these elements can be extracted through chemical or physical processes, paving the way for diverse applications across industries. RCPLs expertise lies in converting such waste into value-added products, with a particular focus on Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafers, vital components for the semiconductor industry. The partnership envisions the establishment of a pilot-scale modular unit, capable of processing 50TPD of slag into value-added products.      The success of the pilot trials could herald a new era in waste utilization and resource optimization, positioning BSL as a pioneer in sustainable steel production. With the promise of minimizing waste disposal challenges and fostering innovation, this partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving industry transformation.   Coc M.K Dhan said that the significance of this collaboration extends beyond waste management. BSLs legacy dump of LD slag, a longstanding challenge in the steel industry, stands to be reimagined through this initiative. By tapping into the potential of LD slag utilization, the partnership not only addresses environmental concerns but also reduces reliance on costly imports of Silicon Carbide.
