NCW seeks report on death of newborn in taxi on Shillong h’way

Shillong: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought an action taken report from Meghalaya chief secretary Donald Philips Wahlang after a mother lost her newborn in a tourist taxi during a traffic jam caused by a fishing competition at Pamphyrnai Lake near the Shillong-Nongtoin national highway.NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has asked Wahlang to submit a detailed report within seven days to the commission.It is utmost crucial to conduct a programme to sensitise people of Meghalaya to deal with such cases with empathy, Sharma said, urging the state government to extend all necessary support to the mother of the deceased baby.Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator Adelbert Nongrum on Tuesday brought a zero hour notice in the assembly on the tragic incident in which a pregnant woman had to give birth inside a tourist vehicle due to traffic jam because of a fishing competition. However, the mother lost her newborn.On September 16, Daphiralin Jyrwa of Mawthawniaw village in West Khasi Hills district was forced to deliver a male baby inside a tourist taxi as the vehicle she was travelling in got stranded for hours due to massive traffic jam due to haphazard parking of vehicles on both sides of the national highway, which was occupied by both anglers and spectators attending the fishing competition.Nongrum said such fishing competitions should be put on hold in all districts of the state until the government comes up with proper regulation so that no such incident recurs.Deputy chief minister in-charge, home, Prestone Tynsong, told the house that he would reply to Nongrums zero hour notice on Wednesday.Meanwhile, a police inquiry has begun into the incident. West Khasi Hills SP Bikram Marak said a suo motu case has been registered.Deputy commissioner Garold Dykes said he has already sought a report in this regard, following which action would be taken. Two people were killed and several injured when a bus in Jalgaon hit a road divider and fell from a bridge.Karbi Bhawan in ShillongThe Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya inaugurated a Karbi Bhawan in Shillong, built by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. They also participated in a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a 100-bed hostel-cum-commercial complex for Karbi students. The Karbi Bhawan is a modern building with conference halls, dormitories, a restaurant, suite rooms, and a gym, capable of accommodating up to 50 guests. The project costs approximately Rs 21.5 crore for the Karbi Bhawan and Rs 22 crore for the hostel complex.
