A few months ago, the students of College of Engineering Trivandrum at Sreekaryam too had developed a robot for serving Covid patients and it is being used at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital.
A robot has been deployed to serve the people under observation at Covid First-Line Treatment Centre (CFLTC) in Kariavattom Greenfield Stadium. The robot, named Middleman, was developed by a group of students of Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, and was handed over to district medical officer K S Shinu on Thursday.
It is a five-member group of students comprising Abhijith S S, Nikhil Sureshkumar, Rio Aswin, Arjun P and Gokul C M that has developed the Middleman. The robot, which is operated by remote control, can discharge duties such as serving food to the patients at the CFLTC, act as a communication medium between the patient and the doctor and dispense hand sanitiser. The doctors can consult the patients through a video call using a mobile phone that is part of the robot. The robot is also equipped with pulse oximeter — the doctors can also check the oxygen level in the blood of the patients. There are separate racks in the robot’s belly to load drinking water, food and medicine.
According to the students, the Middleman robot is made of fibre and wood, keeping it lightweight. It has a battery unit that can last up to four hours.
DMO Dr K S Shinu said all the 93 individuals under observation at Kariavattom CFLTC will receive the service of the robot. “Such innovative efforts from students will help strengthen the fight against the Covid pandemic,” the DMO said.
