Inaugurating the international congress on “Renaissance in Sports – Strategies, Challenges and Choices,” sponsored by the University Grants Commission, at the National College here, Mr. Baskaran, captain of the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medal winning Indian hockey team, observed that such events would help identify ways to produce Olympic champions. Along with its economic progress, India will attain top position in the field of sports too over the next 10 years, Mr. Baskaran, a Padma Shri award winner, predicted. The two-day congress that has attracted delegates from India and abroad is being organised by the Research Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, National College, in association with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, NSS Regional Directorate, Chennai, NSS Technical Cell, Kerala, Rotary District 3000, Vasan Estates, Trimmers and Toners, NAPESS, and Young Indians, Tiruchi Chapter. The meet featured plenary sessions and scientific paper presentations on various topics, audio-visual and physical demonstrations and screening of short films and documentaries. Mayilvaganan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tiruchi city, Ravi Murugaiah, chairman, Vasan Estates; M. Muruganandham, governor, Rotary 3000, C. Samuel Chelliah, Regional Director, NSS, Chennai, P. Chinnappa Reddy, president, NAPESS, K. Raghunathan, secretary, National College, K. Anbarasu, principal, and D. Prasanna Balaji, head and director, Research Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, were present at the inaugural function.
