UP: Police await ordinance copy to file FIRs in triple talaq cases

VARANASI: The police have failed to file FIRs in cases of triple talaq as they are yet to get the copy of the recent ordinance on instant talaq . SO Sidhari Ramayan Singh told TOI over phone that the FIR would be lodged once the ordinance copy is procured.The Central government in September brought an ordinance making triple talaq or instant divorce a punishable offence that will invite a jail term. They beat her and kicked out of the house, she alleged adding that she went to her parents home. Two such cases have came to light in Varanasi and Azamgarh districts, where police were waiting for a copy of the ordinance to lodge FIR.A 22-year-old woman was allegedly ousted from the house by her in-laws in the city. She alleged that her in-laws used to torture her for dowry.

Two such cases have came to light in Varanasi and Azamgarh districts, where police were waiting for a copy of the ordinance to lodge FIR.A 22-year-old woman was allegedly ousted from the house by her in-laws in the city. She was married to Mumtaz Ahmad on February 12, 2017. She alleged that her in-laws used to torture her for dowry. They beat her and kicked out of the house, she alleged adding that she went to her parents home. Later, her husband through someone sent a piece of paper inscribed with triple talaq in Urdu to her on September 19.To lodge a complaint she with her father went to Jaipura police station on September 24, but they had to return empty handed at that time as the police were clueless about the relevant sections in absence of ordinance copy. Later, they approached the SSP office on October 6 from where the matter was forwarded to Jaipura police station for further action.”We are procuring the ordinance copy, after which the FIR would be lodged immediately,” SO Vijay Chaurasiya told TOI on Thursday.Earlier, similar case came to light in Azamgarh district, where a woman living in Sidhari area charged her husband with giving triple talaq over phone from Dubai on September 20.
