BHU students get their head tonsured in protest

VARANASI: Having failed to get their demand of removal of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) chief proctor Royana Singh fulfilled by the varsity administration, a group of students, sitting on a dharna at the central office on the campus since November 29, got their heads tonsured on Wednesday.“We are protesting the apathy of the varsity administration towards our demand of removing the chief proctor for her dictatorial attitude. Our stir would continue till the demand is fulfilled,” said the protesters.BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said, “The registrar had already made it clear that their protest is against varsity rules and comes under the category of indiscipline.”He said, “They had been informed that three separate committees had already been formed to probe into the matters of LLB students, injury caused to a nursing student and also the group of students staging sit-in. The varsity has made it clear that any action would be taken after submission of report by these committees.”The BHU campus has been witnessing a fresh series of unrest since November 28, started by a group of LLB students debarred from exams due to low attendance.On November 29, BSc nursing students staged a sit-in demanding recognition of their college by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).Proctorial Board personnel evicted the nursing students forcefully after which a student Manju alleged that chief proctor slapped her causing eardrum rapture.
