Five of trader’s family end lives in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur: Five members of a family committed suicide reportedly due to pressure of huge financial debts in Gorakhpur on Sunday.The body of Ramesh Gupta, a 58-year-old trader, was found near the railway track near Surajkund overbridge on Sunday morning. While all others had died, her father went towards the railway track to end his life because he suspected the poison did not work. He has asked the administration to provide help to the family,” he said. Shortly afterwards, Rachna felt stomach pain and was taken to hospital where she died.

Around the same time, the bodies of his wife Sarita (45), daughter Payal (15) and son Ayush (10) were found in bed in their house in Sahebganj under Rajghat police station.Gupta’s eldest daughter, 20-year-old Rachna, was alive when the police reached the house. However, they had all consumed poison and Rachna died soon after being taken to hospital, police said.All bodies have been sent for postmortem examination, said SSP Gorakhpur Sunil Kumar Gupta.The government has provided the family Rs 25,000 as aid for cremation.Gupta owned a shop selling oil and pulses in Mahewa Mandi. His marriage to Sarita was his second after his first wife died. From his first marriage, he had a son named Rajat (25). He lives in a separate house near Mahewa Mandi and runs a shop.According to his neighbours, Gupta had taken huge loans and was very disturbed because he was unable to repay them. His lenders would often demand their payments.“Rajat said his father had taken huge loans from the market and was under pressure of debts. Before her death, Rachna Gupta had told police that she and her family members had consumed poison with dinner on Saturday. While all others had died, her father went towards the railway track to end his life because he suspected the poison did not work. Shortly afterwards, Rachna felt stomach pain and was taken to hospital where she died. Gupta too, died before he could reach the railway track,” the SSP added.Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the suicides, said Vinay Gautam of Gorakhnath temple.“We have received a message from CM Yogi in which he has expressed grief over the suicides by five members of a family. He has asked the administration to provide help to the family,” he said.
