Vizianagaram: Vizianagaram district officials have sent a report to the state government asking for the notification of 17 of the 34 mandals in the district as drought affected.According to the report, almost all the 17 mandals have been severely affected by drought. There has been a deficit rainfall of 20% from the month of June to October 27, with the district receiving only 680 mm as against the average 855 mm for the time period. The officials pointed that the rainfall deficit has been higher in the Vizianagaram sub-division as against the Parvathipuram sub-division, which is a heavy rainfall zone.“We have submitted the data-backed report to the state government and are awaiting a government notification to declare the listed mandals as drought-hit,” J Venkata Rao, DRO, said on Saturday.Residents and farmers of Vizianagaram mandal, much of which is still rural, have filed a petition urging the district administration to list the mandal as drought hit.A YSR Congress Party leader in Vizianagaram, M. Trinadh, said “We are surprised that the Vizianagaram mandal has not made it to the list, considering the fact that it ranks amongst the driest of the mandals in the entire district.”He said that the mandal consists of 14 major villages with a combined population of 50,000 people of whom 85% was dependent on agriculture.
