Holi parties come under scanner of electoral officers

Some political leaders are planning to organise Holi celebrations for their political campaigns and lure voters.The MCC does not prohibit people and political leaders from celebrating Holi. Visakhapatnam: With political leaders and activists planning to celebrate Holi on Thursday and Friday with people in their constituencies in order to lure voters, electoral officers in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts will be keeping a watch on political parties activities to rule out possible violations of the Model Code of Conduct ( MCC ).Sources said that as Visakhapatnam is the only city in the state with a cosmopolitan culture, Holi will be celebrated in several places by different communities. There are no restrictions for Holi but if any political leader or party organises a Holi celebration, the cost of the event will be booked under their election campaign expenditure, said Visakhapatnam district electoral officer , K Bhaskar.Electoral officers said that political parties and leaders have no right to use the festival as an occasion to serve their political interest, such as distributing free liquor and giving speeches to lure voters.Some teams have been appointed to videograph Holi celebrations at selected places to keep a record of party activities and leaders.As all liquor shops have downed their shutters from 4 am on Wednesday and will reopen on March 23 due to MLC elections in the region, some people have preserved spirits to distribute to the people during Holi celebrations, sources said.
