According to police, Hiren died by suicide after jumping into Kalwa Creek.

Neighbours said Mansukh Hiren used to teach children in his building how to swim.

"Mansukh Hiren's body was recovered from Mumbra creek. No injury marks were found on the body, post-mortem is being conducted," Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said in the state Assembly on Friday.

Asked about the incident, Mumbai Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh and Joint Commissioner Milind Bharambe refused to comment on Mansukh Hiren's death. "Mansukh Hiren died by suicide and that is confirmed. We will update later," the top officials told reporters outside the Commissioner's office in Mumbai on Friday.

Shortly afterward, Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and Joint Commissioner Milind Bharambe were seen arriving at the Vidhan Bhavan.
