AGARTALA: About 500 Congress members, led by president of the state unit Birajit Sinha, courted arrest during the Bharat Bandh the party had called in protest against rising fuel prices on Monday."We could not organize picketing in many places, but the people are with us. The Centre has created an unprecedented economic crisis in the country and failed to keep the promises it made before election," Sinha said. "The country is now united in its protest against such an abrupt hike in prices, which has made the lives of the people miserable," he added.While Congress said the bandh was "total and successful", ruling BJP played it down saying that "normal work" had continued across the state and the bandh had minimal impact.Except government establishments, all other services were disrupted across the state. Schools and colleges recorded thin attendance. Streets were empty, with the exception of Tripura Road Transport buses plying the roads. Private transport operators lent total support to the bandh - not a single auto or bus came out on the streets. Rail and air connectivity, however, were not affected.
