Tripura bandh today in protest against firing

AGARTALA: The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), along with five other tribal parties, has called a dawn-to-dusk Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC) bandh on Saturday in protest against the unprovoked police firing at Madhab Bari in West Tripura district earlier this week.The parties which have called the bandh are Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT-Tipraha group), INPT, Twipra State Party (TSP), National Conference of Tripura (NCT) and Tripura People’s Party (TPP). He added that the state government would not allow any attempt to disturb peace and development. The IPFT has also demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the Madhav Bari incident.INPT general secretary Jagadish Debbarma said the incident has triggered serious reactions among the common people and affected the amity between tribals and non-tribals. Only Indigenous People’s Front of Twipra (IPFT), BJP’s partner in the government, didn’t support the strike.The strike supporters have demanded judicial inquiry into the Madhav Bari incident by a sitting high court judge, Rs 25 lakh compensation for each victim, withdrawal of cases against bandh supporters and resignation of CM Biplab Kumar Deb. On Tuesday, at least six persons were injured in West Tripura district when police and paramilitary jawans resorted to lathicharge and fired in the air to disperse anti-citizenship bill protesters.“We want the government to order a judicial inquiry as the possibility of CPM hand in Tuesday’s clash clash could not be rule out,” said Tribal welfare minister and IPFT general secretary Mever Kumar Jamatia.
