Record increase in gender ratio in Tripura electoral rolls

AGARTALA: The final electoral rolls of Tripura published on Wednesday showed a record increase of the gender ratio in the state to 972 females to 1,000 males, Tripura Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sriram Taranikanti said here. "The Election Commission has allowed the state Election Department to publish the final photo-affixed electoral rolls," Taranikanti said.According to the final rolls, in all 2,598,290 voters including 1,281,127 females have been enrolled in the electoral rolls increasing by 1.45 per cent voters from last year's rolls.Around 18,719 names were deleted from the electoral rolls due to various reasons, including death and shifting of places. Over 55,969 first time voters under the age group of 18-19 years were included their names in the rolls.According to the draft electoral lists published on September 1 last year, the total number of voters in Tripura was 2,561,040 including 1,262,404 women. "Though I have no exact data readily available, the sex ratio of Tripura (in the electoral rolls) is quite good compared to the national average and many states in India," the CEO told reporters after publishing the final electoral rolls.In the 2017 electoral rolls in Tripura, there were 965 female voters for every 1,000 males.On the basis of these final rolls, the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Tripura will be held.After about a four-and-half-month-long summary revision of the voters' list, the final rolls were published on Wednesday simultaneously across the state with January 1, 2019, as qualifying date of age.
