INPT to go it alone in Tripura

AGARTALA: The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura INPT ) on Monday named party president and former militant leader Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhwal and general secretary Jagadish Debbarma from East Tripura (reserved for tribals) and West Tripura LS seats respectively.The INPT announced the names of its candidates after failing to forge an alliance with Congress.Earlier, Indigenous Peoples' Front of Tripura (IPFT), BJP's ally in the state government, had fielded it's president and revenue minister NC Debbarma from East Tripura and Youth IPFT chief Shukla Charan Noatia from West Tripura. According to reports, both the parties are facing internal disputes over nominations.On the other hand, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday issued the notification for the Lok Sabha election in West Tripura constituency which will go to the polls on April 11. The last date for withdrawing nomination is March 28.The notification for the East Tripura seat, which will go to the polls on April 18, will be issued on Tuesday.The CEO said all arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair election. The CPM has re-nominated its two sitting MPs - Jitendra Chowdhury (East Tripura) and Shankar Prasad Datta (West Tripura).While CPM and IPFT have already launched their poll campaigns across the state, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally at Khumlung on Wednesday. The secretary of the ECI, Arvind Anand, has arrived in the state to oversee poll preparations.

However, neither BJP nor Congress have announced the names of their candidates. Chief electoral officer (CEO) Sriram Taranikant said the last date for filing nomination is March 25 and scrutiny of nomination will be done on March 26. The last date for withdrawing nomination is March 28.The notification for the East Tripura seat, which will go to the polls on April 18, will be issued on Tuesday.The CEO said all arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair election. The secretary of the ECI, Arvind Anand, has arrived in the state to oversee poll preparations. The deployment of central paramilitary forces has already started.
