Tripura state Cabinet has decided to send a proposal to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for announcing Unokoti as World Heritage Site. Education minister Ratan Lal Nath informed this to the reporters after the state Cabinet on Tuesday evening. He said, the state Cabinet has approved the proposal on Tuesday. Tripura recorded an income of Rs three crore from tourism sector last year. He also informed that the council of ministers adopted tourism policy in the State designed by the state government to promote Tripura globally. The minister also said, the State Government laid maximum priority on border tourism, eco tourism, religious tourism, tea tourism, adventure tourism, ethnic tourism and heritage tourism. He said the State Government has a plan to earn Rs 1,000 crore from the tourism industry in Tripura. According to Nath, the number of tourists is increasing in Tripura. He claimed a total of 4, 83, 477 tourists including foreign nationals visited Tripura in 2017-18 and 5, 23, 579 tourists in 2018-19. In last year, Tripura already registered footfalls of as many as 3, 77,202 tourists till November and it is expected to cross six lakh, said the education minister. He told reporters that, maximum number of tourists came from Bangladesh, the neighbouring country of Tripura. Besides Bangladesh, tourists have been coming from USA, UK, Canada, Hungary and Switzerland also.
